WHY I USE WALKING LONG DISTANCES FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

44 years ago, August 10, 1978, while an exercise physiology student at Oregon State University, I embarked on a 37 day, 1,420 mile solo run from Corvallis, Oregon to Calgary, Canada, carrying only a sleeping bag, tent and small backpack, to promote exercise and nutrition.

At the time, there was little knowledge among the general public about these two critical lifestyle factors in being healthy, and long distance events, for a cause, were rare. Little did I know that I would still be doing these long distance events when most people my age are set to retire.
